Term 6

RE

This term in RE, we are continuing our work on pilgrimages as we now look at the effect it has on the environment. We are also very excited as this term, we will be taking part in our own pilgrimage to Walsingham.

In our first RE lesson, we have been looking at pilgrimages and why it is portent to others and the reasons the sites are visited. We started with Lourdes where people visit a site where healing is believed to take place.

In our second lesson, we looked at the pilgrimage to Lindisfarne. We have looked at this site in a historical sense before but not necessarily a religious one. We weee amazed to discover that this is a popular pilgrimage where pilgrims carry a wooden cross over wet sand to Lindisfarne to replicate what it must have been like for Jesus when he was carrying the cross.

In our third lesson, we learnt about Kumbh Mela, which is a popular pilgrimage in India where Hindus bathe in rivers that are believed to have immortality gifts. We created a board game to demonstrate our knowledge and test our friends out in a fun way.

Geography

In Geography this term, we are focusing on the River Nile and how it is important for the Egyptians to settle near a water source given that 90% of Egypt is desert. We will also be looking at how the water source is a good use to provide hydroelectricity.

In our first lesson, we looked at which countries the River Nile passed through. We were amazed at how long the river is. We created keys to show which rivers it passed through.

In our second lesson, we looked at the different farming seasons that the Egyptians had to follow so they could grow crops. They have 3 seasons and they rely on the River Nile to flood so it leaves rich soil to grow crops. We created a wheel to help us understand which seasons we in which month.

In our third lesson, we looked at the major cities and towns that settled near the river in Egypt. We retrieved our map reading skills to allow us to read the keys correctly. Then, we used our grid referencing and positional language to describe the locations of towns and cities.

History

In History, we are continuing our work on Ancient Egyptians as we look at their Gods and their rituals that they took part in, especially to prepare for the afterlife.

In History, we started looking at the different Gods that the Ancient Egyptians believed in. We then retrieved Gods from other religions to see if there were any similarities in the Gods that were worshipped.

PE - Rounders

As we approach the peak of summer, who doesn't love a good game of rounders! We will be working on our batting and fielding skills before we apply these to game situations.

DT - Food

One of Mr Shortland's favourite units! We will be making our own healthy snack bar, making sure we think about the ingredients that we are adding in. Of course, we have to sample what is out there or we wouldn't be doing a thorough job!

In our first lesson, we looked at the different types of food such as reared, grown, caught and processed. We also looked at how these foods could be stored. We made sure we thought about our local environment and the food that it can provide.

One of Mr Shortland’s lessons….food tasting! We can’t make healthy bars without doing our research. We taste tested a range of foods and gave them a score out of 5 on smell, appearance, texture and taste. We also looked at the information each box gives us.

Science

In Science, we continue our work on Living Things and their Habitats unit but our focus shifts towards what we can do to help the environment and look at the work of people who are trying their hardest to save animals from losing their homes.

In Science, we continued our work on classification keys as we tried to classify leaves. We were mindful only to pick leaves off the floor as we know that leaves on the trees are still living things.

PSHE

In PSHE, we are continuing our work on Living in the Wider World. We are focusing on money and how we budget money and what influences us to spend our money.

In PSHE, we looked at what influences us to buy products. We pretended that we were a customer who had £20 to spend. We had influencers such as toy store owners, charities and best friends trying to influence us how to spend money.
