Term 2

We have been very fortunate to have Reverend Sally come into school and read us the Nativity story. The children listened really carefully and asked some fantastic questions.

This week we have been learning all about road safety. We looked at the different hazards we can find on the road and then learnt how to cross the road safely.

DT- What makes a structure strong?  Bends or joins? Our DT learning has given us great excitement as we are learning about free-standing structures. We know that we are going to be creating a bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff to cross successfully ensuring it meets our success criteria. We started our unit by exploring free-standing structures in our environment and discussed what is classed as a free-standing structure. We looked at free-standing in our local area such as Boston Stump and then we researched free-standing structures across the world we are aware of such as the Eiffel Tower and The Shard. We have been able to explore different materials to create free-standing structures, identifying which is best and ways to make our structure stiffer, stronger and stable.

Geography - Where in the school are we? In our Geography learning we are enjoying exploring maps and our school. We will be learning how to  follow simple maps to different points in our school and  looking at aerial photographs to determine where we are in the school.

In Maths, we have been looking at addition. We have been able to make fact families and create addition number sentences. We have been able to use this knowledge to help us understand number bonds within and to 10. Our latest maths learning has consisted of being able to add two numbers together using our knowledge of part-whole models. We have been able to use objects and the ten frames to represent the numbers we are adding together and write the number sentence once we had created it on the ten frame. We are able to use sentence stems to help us with our explanations such as 'One part is ___. One part is ____. The whole is____' and '____ plus ____ is equal to____'.

To begin term 2, we have been exploring the story 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We have been able to re-tell the story and describe characters to enable us to write the beginning, middle and end. We have enjoyed using drama, role play, puzzles and story maps and mountains to help us have a secure understanding of the story.

PE - Yoga : How can you stay safe during balancing?

The children are really enjoying their yoga lessons. We began by learning that Yoga is exercise for the mind and body. It can help to build strength and flexibility and make us feel good.
They also learnt that Namaste is a word often used in yoga. Namaste is how we say hello and good bye. It is how we thank each other for a wonderful yoga class.

PE- Gymnastics – Why is controlling our body important in gymnastic sequence?

The children have been learning the sequence in which they climb on and off apparatus.

In Science we have continued to learn all about different materials. This week we have been using our knowledge of the properties of different materials to help us build a house for the three little pigs.
