Term 1

Maths - Grouping and sorting

In Maths, the children used the objects to sort and group according to their own ideas. We had everything from size, colour and shape. They certainly had some excellent ideas!

 

 

 

Computing

After reading 'Clicker Cat' and the guidance of Super Spud, the children were able to discuss and sort scenarios that would be safe and not safe. Well done Year One.

English - The Three Little Pigs

Building on the work of Reception, the children were able to predict the story from the clues hidden in the box. They then went onto answer questions about the text and characters showing a secure understanding. Later in the week, the children were able to act it out! Great actions were seen and repeated phrases were heard.

 

Science

Big Question: How can I identify a variety of materials based on their properties? 

Which materials can be recycled? 

 

Year 1 started their Science learning by exploring a range of objects and identifying the materials they were made from. The children were able to use vocabulary such as `glass`, `wood`, `material,` `plastic` and `metal` and started to explore their properties. Throughout the year we shall also be making observations of the different seasons and weather.  

History - Exploring toys from the past

After hearing about Mrs Morris' granny and mummy, the children carefully and held the toys from the past. They were excited to see how they worked and what they were made from.

 

 

 

 

 

PSHE - Who cares for me?

In PSHE, the children were talking about and discussing who cared about them and kept them safe. They were very clear about who these were and made great representations. 

Computing 

Today we have been learning that sometimes when people go online they don’t always tell the truth and sometimes they pretend to be someone else. We then discussed how people can make people feel very sad online by saying mean things, putting unkind pictures etc. Finally we sorted  statements of what is kind behaviour and what is not kind behaviour.

 

 

 

 

ART - Balloon Dog

The children have begun their sculpture work by exploring the oval shapes and sketching them. We practiced and rehearsed this before adding watercolour to it.

Outside Play - working together 

The children have certainly enjoyed the brighter weather and being able to demonstrate their great climbing and balancing skills on the trim trail. They have learnt how to take turns and show a caring attitude towards each together. 

 

  

 

 

English - Writing parts of the story

The children have been able to write their own story opening and middle to the story so far. Impressive work has been seen and the enthusiasm has been brilliant to see.

 

Music - identifying the pitch

After listening to music and using percussion instruments, the children were able to discuss and identify the high and low sounds. We then explained how the instruments made us feel.

 

Maths - one less

As part of the Maths lesson, the children used the counters to take away one. The children used the vocabulary of find one less.

 

 

 

RE - Retelling stories from the Bible

After listening to 'Noah's Ark and The Lost Son', the children were able to order the events and discuss what they learnt from them. The retelling certainly demonstrated their understanding. This allowed the children to reflect on how God loves the Earth.

 

 

PE - working as a team

The children took it in turns to be a leader and design a game with the equipment provided. They were excited to make the rules and encourage others to do well. What brilliant sporting stars!

 

 

Balloon Dog - sculpture in action

 

The children have been using clay to create their own version of Balloon Dog. They learnt to roll, shape and use water to create slips when attaching the various shapes together. The process was new to the children and great discussion was had. They were very proud of themselves!
