Term 2

Term 2- It's good to be you

This term our topic is called `It's good to be you!` This will allow the children to understand how everyone is special, begin to understand tolerance and explore a range of cultures and celebrations. We are also very excited about this term as we will begin learning the songs for our Christmas Nativity. In Maths, the children will begin to explore counting and number recognition but also take part in solving problems. The children will now split for phonics daily and consolidate their set 1 sounds and begin to read a selection of words with greater independence. We are looking forward to seeing how all of our children continue to flourish and grow this term. There will also be lots of experiences for Reception to to take part in, this will include our school trip and a range of visitors.

Mrs Smith and I have been blown away by the fantastic pictures sent to us throughout the October half term. The children have been very busy collecting Autumnal objects and applying their Maths skills to sort and create repeating patterns. We have enjoyed exploring your creative pictures and we can see lots of Autumn collages. Thank you to all the parents who have supported with their homework projects. We can't wait to hear all about the children's half term break on Monday.

Week 1- Bonfire Night

This week the children have been learning about Bonfire Night and how it is celebrated by families each year. They were able to make connections to the festival of Diwali which they had covered last term. Throughout this week, everyone has had the opportunity to create their own firework pictures using the printing technique and also create their own representations of fireworks using the enhanced provision. We have been blown away by the vocabulary generated by the children to describe a firework display and throughout our circle times, the children have learnt the importance of staying safe when taking part in activities with parents. Next week, the children will have a visit from the local fire fighter team and build upon their knowledge of Bonfire fire night and how emergency services help the community.

Week 2: Kandinsky

This week the children are learning about the artist Kandinsky and his use of shape in his pieces of art. This has linked perfectly with our Maths learning on triangles and circles. They have had the opportunities to explore colour mixing during child initiated time and applied this in their representations of Kandinsky's `Concentric Circles` art work. Fantastic work Love Class.

Reception's Autumn Walk

Love Class had a fantastic morning visiting Westgate Woods. The children revisited their learning on the season of Autumn and had the opportunity to collect lots of Autumn objects. Everyone could identify the different colours of the leaves and discussed how during this season the leaves fall to the ground. Some children recognised some of the animals on the signs and remembered that these animals may be hibernating for the Winter soon.

Fire safety

The children enjoyed their visit from a fire officer this afternoon. They discussed Bonfire Safety and the role of a fire fighter. The children were very excited to learn about the uniform that they wear to keep safe and even had the opportunity to try on different items.

Anti-Bullying and Odd Sock Day

This week the children have been taking part in Anti-Bullying Week and on Monday they all wore odd socks to celebrate odd sock day. This year's theme was `Respect`.  For this, the children talked about how it is important to show respect and kindness to make others happy. The children have been reading the story of Elmer and discussed why it is important to celebrate individuals for their uniqueness. The children felt that if everybody was the same, the world but a very serious and boring place.  We also talked about what bullying is and what we should do if this ever happens in our school. In our circle times, the children enjoyed talking about friendship and they discussed the qualities they think are important when finding a friend.

Road Safety Week

This week the children have been learning about how to keep safe when crossing the roads. They identified different road signs, learnt about the Green Cross Code and practised crossing the road in our outdoor area. The children enjoyed using the road signs and pretending to be our road safety heroes such as police officers, traffic wardens and school crossing supervisor.

The children had a fantastic morning on Friday as they were able to meet a number of animals, great and small. This week the children have been learning about nocturnal animals and today they had the chance to meet a skunk and an owl. During this discussion, the children were able to identify the features of an owl and find out more about where they live and what they eat. They were also able to learn about a snake and a tarantula and some children showed courage in holding these creatures!

Christingles

The children had the opportunity to create their own Christingles with members from St Thomas' Church. Everyone enjoyed identify the key parts of a Christingle and learning about why we celebrate this time of year. Well done Reception!
