Term 2

Term 2

Welcome to an overview of our Term 2 learning in Year Two!

Our subject Big Questions this term are:

Music: Can different instruments create different moods?

PE (Yoga): How can you control your focus?

PE (Gymnastics): How does speed improve sequences?

Design Technology: Can the purpose of a recipe affect the type of ingredients you use?

History: Can one person change the world?

PSHE: Are surprises and secrets the same?

Religious Education: Do you only have to say thank you if you believe in God?

Science: What creates a healthy plant?

English

To begin this term, we are continuing with the Gingerbread Man story and working to create our own version! We have made substitutions and developed vocabulary in preparation for planning and drafting our own version of the story. Since creating our own character similar to the Gingerbread Man, we also used paired improvisation to develop our characters - we worked in pairs to ask each other questions and responded in character. There were some great conversations! Exciting times ahead!

Physical Education - Yoga

We have started Yoga this term in PE and we are really enjoying the start we've made! The children retrieved their knowledge of the starting position and starting the session with saying 'Namaste' including breathing exercises. Then the children practiced yoga poses and gave feedback to each other; the final step was to complete the poses in a sequence - this is called a 'flow'. Excellent technique on show!

PSHE - Relationships

In PSHE, we have continued our concept of relationships and this term started looking at what we mean by bullying. We know that bullying can happen face-to-face and online. We also know that bullying can be physical, verbal and online too. The children discussed how we can identify bullying - this is when these acts of unkindness happen regularly, time and time again. We then thought of suggestions of what we could do if we saw bullying happening. The children explained it is really important to speak to the trusted adults we know about this right away. Really good discussions as a whole-class!

History

In History this term, we are looking at people that have had a lasting impact. We start with Florence Nightingale and the impact she had on Victorian hospitals. In the first lesson we looked at Victorian hospitals and what they may have looked like. Then, we developed an understanding of the work Florence did to improve them.

PE - Gymnastics

In PE, with Mr Melson, we are practicing our gymnastic skills and techniques this term. This week we were using the apparatus to create balances using different parts of our bodies.

Children In Need 2025

We had a cake sale for Children in Need this week and donated money to enjoy a cake. We enjoyed time to stop and discuss the purpose of Children In Need.

Road Safety Week

During Road Safety Week 2025, we started by creating some top tips for keeping safe when using the road, in a vehicle or walking nearby to a road. The children came up with some excellent ideas such as using a crossing when you can, holding the hand of an adult and wearing a seatbelt at all times.

:Later in the week, the children then put their own top tips to the test when we practiced crossing a road of our own! We used role play to setup our own road to make it as real-life as possible before crossing the road in pairs safely. Great work!

Religious Education

In RE this week, we continued with a new Christianity story from the Bible - the burning bush. The children listened to the story again and discussed the key parts; then they brought the story to life using role play in small groups. The children then shared their results with each other!

PE - Yoga Continued!

Our Yoga learning continued this week and the children learnt a new safari flow including new poses such as cobra, lion and tree! The children showed great balance and composure to create the poses and hold them as part of the flow.

Maths - Addition & Subtraction

In recent weeks we have been practicing exchanging when adding and subtraction. We have used manipulatives (dienes) to do this practically at first before moving onto pictoral and abstract versions of this. The children have worked brilliantly with this tricky Maths.

History

Our History learning has taken us back to Victorian times when Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole were developing the nursing profession to what we know today. After learning about Florence Nightingale recently, this week we introduced Mary Seacole. We know that she overcame barriers to become a nurse working in the Crimea during the war. The children listened to her story and then sequenced her life story practically.

Religious Education

This week we continued our journey with Moses with the story of the exodus. The children listened carefully to the story, discussed together and then sequenced the story practically to show their understanding.
