Term 2
English
This term in English, we are using the story and film of How to Train Your Dragon, to inspire the children to write their own narratives about dragons based in the Vikings era.
To help us write our sagas about when dragons ruled the skies in Viking times, we pretended to be Vikings elders talking around the campfire to our grandchildren and children of the village about our memories.
As part of our sagas we came up with a main dragon character and completed a top trumps cards depicting an image of our dragon and what characteristics they would have.
We then completed a vocabulary target, writing down different words to describe our main dragon for our sagas.
Reading
This term in our Reading lessons, we are going to be reading the book Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo, understanding how to read with expression and answering different comprehension questions about it.
Maths
At the start of this term we began looking at area of shapes.
We then moved on to looking at Multiplication and learning all the rest of the times tables that we need to know by the end of Year 4.
We learnt different strategies on how to remember some of the times tables, like in the 9 times tables the digits when added together will always make nine.
Science
During our Science lessons this term, we are going to be looking at sound and how sound travels.
During some of our lesson we made some home made musical instruments using tubs and pasta or rice to make shakers, pots with elastic bands to make a kind of guitar, as well as using rulers and balloons to test vibrations to make sounds.
We were excited to try out the string telephone experiment to help understand how sound travels as vibrations through a solid medium (the string) rather than just air, using two paper cups connected by a taut string.
Geography
In Geography this term, we are focusing on River and why they are an important feature of a settlement.
Design Technology
In our Design Technology lesson this term, we are going to be looking closely at different food packaging, understanding the purpose and then designing our own.
In our Design Technology lesson today, we looked at different 3D shapes that manufactures use when making packaging for their food items. We carefully opened up a Weetabix box and looked closely at how it is constructed from a net, identifying the faces, interlocking tabs and glued tabs, to which we then drew into our books and labelled. Afterwards we then chose a 3D shape net to cut out and put together.
During our next lesson we carefully looked at different styles of box packaging and had a go at making some ourselves to test how strong or weak the different types are.
After looking at a design brief the children were tasked with designing and creating their own Christmas Cookie boxes that would appeal to children between 7-11 years old.
They then had to measure, draw out, cut out, score and fold their boxes to create a 3D model.
Religious Education
In our Religious Educations lessons this term we have been looking at Hinduism.
In our first lesson we learnt about how many Hindus create their own shrine in their homes so that they can worship their gods/deities at any time, especially if they do not live close to a Mandir temple.
During the next lesson, we looked closely at a Puja tray, that the Hindus use as part of their shrine. We had a go at drawing one and then labelling it carefully to show all of the different items that they use to worship, that stimulate all of their senses.
Music
In our Music lessons we have been learning how to sing some of the Young Voices songs, including Power in Me, All Over the World and the Pop Medley.
In Music this term we are singing, learning the songs that will be sung at the Young Voices Concert in Sheffield in January 2026.
During this term in Music, both Year 4 classes have been coming together to learn all the songs that will be sung at the Young Voices concert in January.
It has been exciting learning the different styles of songs and really learning to sing in harmony with each other.
French
In French this term, we are going to continue learning our numbers in French up to 100.
P.S.H.E.
In P.S.H.E. this term, we are continuing to look at relationships.
This week has been Anti-Bullying week and as part of our learning we created a Kennings Poem about how we can use our Power for Good to help stop bullying.
