Courage Class Collective Worship
Courage class were honoured to be the first class to hold their Class Collective Worship for their parents/careers and the rest of Key Stage 2.
We looked at our class virtue of Courage and what it actually means, recalling the story of Daniel and the Lions Den from the Bible.
English
Writing to Inform
In connection with our first History topic, this term in English we are going to be reading Beowulf, an Anglo-Saxon story about a hero called Beowulf who helps defeat Heorot from a horrifying creature called Grendel.

As we continue to look at Beowulf in our English lesson and think about writing diary entries, we used freeze framing and tableau (motionless representation from a story) to help us to pick out the key events from the story that we could recall in our writing. The children really enjoyed depicting the fight scene between Beowulf, the hero and Grendel the monster.
Maths
Place Value
During the next few weeks, Year Fours are going to be looking at place value, building onto their knowledge that they learnt in Year 3, and moving their learning on to using nu,bees into the thousands.
Week 1
This week, we began looking at place value by recapping our learning from Year 3 when we looked at numbers up to 1000.
Using images of One’s, Tens and Hundreds dienes, we created a picture then wrote the value. We then looked at how we can represent numbers up to 1000 by using different mathematical manipulatives, which the children really enjoyed completing.
This week in Maths we are looking at how we add 2 4-digit numbers together with exchanging.
Reading
Bertie and the Alien Chicken
This term in Reading we are going to be reading the hilarious story, Bertie and the Alien Chicken.

Art
Drawing - How is movement portrayed in drawings?
This term in art we are going to be looking at the artist Rembrandt and his techniques used to create drawings in his own sketchbooks. The children we get to use a variety of different mediums to draw with including; graded pencils, drawing pens, felt tips, charcoal and ink.
In our first lesson, we learnt about Rembrandt and how he was a famous Dutch artist who painted lots of portraits, but who also enjoyed completing sketches in his own sketchbooks. Using a double page spread, we began to look at some of his sketches, detailing what we liked about them and then had a go at drawing them ourselves.
Physical Education
Fitness
LO: To recognise different areas of fitness and explore what your body can do.
In our first lesson, we looked closely at how physical fitness includes many different parts such as agility, balance, speed and strength.

History
How did the Anglo-Saxons develop England?
In our first History lesson, we looked at Sutton Hoo and how the discovery of this Anglo-Saxon burial site lead to Historians understanding more about their civilisation and beliefs.
We carried out an archaeological dig ourselves, carefully removing soil with a brush to uncover artefacts below.

During this week in History we have been looking at the last impact that Anglo-Saxons and Viking had on place names around England and used atlases to help us locate them around the country.
Science
Where does a puddle go?
This week in Science we were looking at the differences between, solids, liquids and gases, by comparing different materials.
In our Science lesson this week we were carrying out an experiment to help us understand changing states of matter.
Using two different coloured ice cubes, one blue one yellow, we made a prediction about what would happen over the course of our lesson. The children were excited to see what would happen and more so when the ice began to melt and blend together to give green water.
By the end of the lesson, the children understood that by applying heat or cooling so,etching down you could change states of matter, like water can change to a solid when cooled in a freezer and then when ice is exposed to a warmer temperature it changes back to water.
Music
Why do composers choose certain instruments?
In Music, we learnt about how duration means how long each note is played/sung for and that tempo tells us the general speed of the music.
We then discussed if all instruments can create different durations.
After choosing a different instrument each, we experimented with them to create different durations.
French
Tu as un animal?
This term in French we are learning about how to ask if you have a pet and how to respond. During our lesson this week we were playing games using pictures of pets that we had to match to their French names.
