Term 1
Term 1
Welcome to an overview of our Term 1 learning in Year Two!
Computing - Online Safety
In computing, the children have been talking about what online safety is and what we can do to keep ourselves safe online. They also talked about what do do if they saw something that made them feel worried and the trusted adults they can tell.
Maths - Place Value
In maths the children have been learning about the place value of two digit numbers. The children have found out how many tens and ones are in each number and have used dienes to make each number.
Geography - Landscapes
In Geography this term we are exploring different landscapes. We started the term by discussing human and physical features and understanding the difference. We know that a human feature is made by a human - for example, a church, school or bridge. We know that a physical feature happens naturally - for example, the weather, a mountain or a river. The children spent time identifying the features using different real life pictures!
English - Farmer Duck
In English, the children are exploring the text Farmer Duck. We've had a great time reading the story, discussing the characters and bringing it to life through role play. We know that the better the children understand the sequence of the story, the better their writing will be when they begin to retell the story themselves. Exciting times ahead!
PE - Team Building
We have been working on working as a team and solving problems in PE. First, the children worked as a team to complete an obstacle-type challenge where they had to communicate to each other and watch closely for when it was their turn. Then, the children were all given a farm animal in secret and had to find other children with the same animal as them - but they were not allowed to talk! The children solved this problem by making animal noises and actions to recognise animals the same as them! Great team building exercises and lots of fun!
Maths - Place Value
We have continued our practice of place value knowledge and have now started to partition numbers into tens and ones. We have used practical equipment (dienes) and know how to use a part-part-whole model too. The children have made excellent progress here!
Music - Harvest Performance Rehearsals
Year Two will be performing a Harvest Assembly performance this term at St. Thomas' church - we are very excited! The children have already started rehearsals and practicing by learning the songs, including actions, as well as using their knowledge of harvest as part of the performance. We can't wait to see the final performance coming soon!
English - Pumpkin Soup
Our second English text this year is Pumpkin Soup. The children have enjoyed exploring the story, understanding the plot and using role play to embed their understanding. Great teamwork!
Music - Harvest Performance
The children continue to prepare for their harvest festival performance at the church which is coming up soon. We have continued to rehearse the songs and have now started practicing our speaking parts too which we will deliver during the assembly. Lots of preparation going into the performance - very exciting!
Computing - Online Safety
The children have continued their learning on online safety. This week we discussed information that needs to be private and other information that is okay to share with others. The children worked as a group to discuss the scenarios to and think about which information should remain private.
PSHE
We have discussed emotions this week in PSHE and how our actions can make people feel in different ways. In order to talk about this, we listened carefully to scenarios and the children had to choose how this would make other people feel and stand nearby to the symbol in the classroom that showed this - happy, sad, worried, angry. This led to some excellent discussions!
Emotions Workshop
We were lucky enough this week to have a visitor in Y2 to talk to us about emotions. We spoke about what makes us happy, sad, scared, angry and excited and then discussed how we can manage our emotions by recognising them, reflecting on them and then reacting to them in a positive way. We know that it is OK to be sad, angry or scared but we can use the strategies we learnt to help manage our emotions in a positive way. Great fun!
Maths
We have continued our learning on number this week by ordering numbers from smallest to biggest and then biggest to smallest. We know that the tens column helps us first - if the tens are bigger, it has to be the biggest number. If the tens are the same in both numbers, we then have to look at the ones column to find out which is smallest or biggest. Great practical work!
Music - Harvest Performance @ St. Thomas' Church
After weeks of practice and rehearsal, Year 2 performed their harvest assembly to their adults and Father David at St. Thomas' church on Wednesday. It was a really special occasion and all the children's hard work paid off. There were excellent speakers and beautiful singing voices - enjoyed by all. The children's behaviour was exemplary too. Father David commented on such a wonderful performance. The Year Two team are incredibly proud - FANTASTIC JOB!
Science - Plants Experiment
In Science this term we have been developing our knowledge of plants. This week we setup an experiment to find out the best conditions for a plant to grow healthily. We know the basic needs of a plant to grow but what conditions does a seed need best? We have one plant with water and general light, one with no water and general light, one with water and direct light and one with water but in the dark. The children made excellent predictions on which would grow the best.
English - Poetry Week
We have started our learning on calligram poetry this week - we are on course to create our own - how exciting! We developed vocabulary by describing harvest fruit and vegetables whilst using powerful adjectives and noun phrases. This is in preparation for writing our own calligram poems based on harvest!
