Term 1
Autumn Term Newsletter
English
This has been an exciting term’s focus on the story of Beowulf. We have written wanted posters and diary recounts, practising our use of pronouns, fronted adverbial phrases and emotive language. We especially enjoyed using tableaux to capture ‘freeze frame’ moments of action within the story.
Tableaux - Beowulf & Leofric face Grendel
Maths
This term, we have focused on place value up to and including the thousands. We have also begun to add and subtract numbers, with and without exchanging. We have spent time revising times tables from previous years (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3’s & 6’s) as well as developing our recall of further times tables facts.
Science
This term, we have been working as chemists, seeking to understand how particles behave within solids, liquids and gases, and how they change when heated or cooled. The chocolate experiment was particularly memorable because we could eat the melted chocolate button once cool enough to be safe!
Exploring how heat affects the way particles are bonded
History
We have explored the impact of the Anglo-Saxons on England, starting with the amazing discovery at Sutton Hoo. We discovered that so many place names have remained unchanged since this time. We looked at how the map of England looked really different to what it does now, and that Lincolnshire would have been part of the ancient kingdom of Mercia.
Art
The artist, Rembrandt, has given us lots to think about in terms of how we sketch and capture movement in our drawings. We have discussed how the use of different lines (e.g. horizontal, vertical, thick, thin) informs the artist’s choice. We have had fun trying to sketch each other quickly, concentrating on re-creating the same sense of movement that Rembrandt did.
French
Tu as un animal?
Together, we have learned the French vocabulary for different household pets and have practised asking each other questions about what animals we own.
We played animal bingo - matching the image to the correct French word
RE
Salvation
We have explored the different accounts of the crucifixion, looking at how Mary would have felt at different points in the story, and how Jesus’ death and resurrection are central to understanding the Gospel story. We have also thought about how Easter is celebrated in different Christian traditions.
Music
We have listened to a variety of pieces of music, sometimes thinking about legato and staccato and at other times considering how duration can vary within a piece. We have also thought about how major and minor chords impact the mood of the music.
PSHE
Is it ok not to like someone?
Our PSHE lessons have helped us explore what a good friend looks like and how easy/hard it is to be a good friend to others. We have talked about what to do in different situations.
Computing
Cyberbullying
Linked to our PSHE focus, our computing lessons have helped us to understand the importance of what and how we share data online. We have thought carefully about how to stay safe and how communication via a device is different to face-to-face conversations. We have also spent time looking at how information is organised and accessed online through the Internet.
PE
Our two activities this term have been tag rugby and fitness. We have been learning how to throw and catch the ball and think about our use of space. In fitness, we have had different challenges to complete, testing our stamina, strength and co-ordination.
