Diwali

Sunita came into school with the remit of supporting pupils to understand puja in Hinduism. Her interactive workshops and the activities (dance, art, understanding clothing, culture, religion and prayer) supported children to understand the cultural way of life of Hindus living in India but also in our own town.

For the Y6 pupils who missed this experience due to Covid-19, she took time to support the children in looking at their own heritage and understanding how each of us - even if we share a religion - do things differently in our own families. The children learned to dance, the importance of religion within the culture of Hindu families and they also learned that being different means that Hindus still experience a rich life just as they do.

During the course of these sessions, children - whose experience of a Church of England Primary school with a majority of White British or White other back grounds- the activity broadened the world view of pupils. All children - including those with an EHCP- relished this experience. In addition to these workshops, Sunita led an assembly for all of Key Stage Two (210 children) which reinforced the messages and learning within the whole school community - especially for those children who have been part of Sunita's workshops in the past. This enabled them to revisit their learning and to see that it is still as important as when they learned about it before.
