Term 3

Term 3

Welcome to an overview of our Term 3 learning in Year Two!

Our subject Big Questions this term are:

Music: Does the structure of music matter?

Art: What form is spring?

PE (Dance): How does dance help my feelings?

PE (Target Games): How does challenge motivate you to improve?

Computing: Why do instructions need to be clear?

History: Is one person able to change the world?

PSHE: Is risk always dangerous?

Religious Education: How do Muslims follow the straight path?

Science: How do the properties of materials dictate their uses?

Computing

In Computing this term, we are exploring the world of code! We started by investigating how important instructions are. We know that instructions are most effective when they are in a particular order. Without this, we may not be successful in what we set out to do! The children practiced writing instructions for their partner and telling them to respond to their actions.

History

In History this term, we continue to explore famous people that had a lasting impact. The first lesson was a real treat - the children had picture clues to share and discuss with each other to make predictions on who the famous person we are learning about is! There were also many predictions about WHY our famous person had made an impact and was still well known today. After lots of excitement, Mr Kirkman announced the famous person was explorer Robert Falcon Scott! We then looked at his life and what he had achieved... exciting times ahead!

Speeches Week!

Week 1 of Spring Term has been an exciting one! The children have been developing their speaking and listening skills when creating, rehearsing and performing their own speech! The speech has been based on how we can help wild animals in our local environment. There were many speeches on fish, hedgehogs, squirrels, birds and even bats! The children created a poster to help them talk about the subject as a prompt - they then rehearsed with a partner and shared their posters with each other. Finally, the children presented to the whole class. Great work, Year 2!

PE - Target Games & Dance

This term in PE the children are learning dance with Mr Kirkman and Target Games with Mr Melson. We've had a great start to our PE lessons this term, particularly in dance, with the children practicing following a beat of eight counts - keeping in time with each other and the music!

Maths - equal groups

In Maths this week (Week 2), we have moved forward onto multiplication and division. In the initial lessons we have started at exploring equal groups. The children worked practically to identify equal groups. Later in the week, we started to write our own number sentences to represent visual examples of equal groups - we did this through repeated addition. Great work, Year 2!

Y2 Reading Event

This week our Y2 parents joined us for some great reading fun! There were many activities to be shared and the children had a brilliant time enjoying them with their adults.

Computing

We continued with computing this week where we developed our knowledge of following a coded instructions using bee-bots. The children had maps to make predictions and used a paper-bot at first to predict where they would finish on the map once they had followed the instructions. The children used this time to develop their skills on using the map.

Science - Materials

In Science this term, we explore materials and their uses. At first, we have learnt that materials are what objects are made from. We know that materials have many, many uses. Some of the most popular materials are plastic, glass, metal and wood. In this lesson, the children grouped the objects according to their material - they then used words such as hard, rigid, bendy and flexible to describe their properties.

Online Safety Workshop

The Y2 children were lucky enough this week to have a visitor in to do a workshop on online safety. The children looked at appropriate behaviour online, how to recognise risk and how to deal with any issues they come across. We know that it is important that we are only accessing things that are age-appropriate and should speak with an adult straight away if we have any problems. The children participated fantastically throughout the workshop and answered questions brilliantly.

PSHE

This week in PSHE the children learnt about medicines and the different types. First, they looked at how medicines helps us but how it can also be harmful if not used correctly. Then, the children grouped them accordingly and verbally discussed their uses together.

Maths - arrays

This week we have moved further on in Maths by looking at arrays. The children have practiced this by creating their own arrays with counters, followed by drawing their own arrays on whiteboards to represent multiplication number sentences. The children's knowledge has developed brilliantly across the week and their understanding is much more secure after using practical equipment - we LOVE a practical Maths lesson!

Music - ocarina

This term, we are lucky enough to develop our ocarina skills from Year 1 in order to play short phrases and some notes from well-known tunes. This week we have recapped how to make a clear sound and worked as musicians to play in unison, together, as well as keeping in time with each other and following the conductor... Mr Kirkman!
