Term 5
Summer Newsletter
PSHE
This term, we are looking at living in the wider world in PSHE. Our work will focus around communities, digital footprints and moving onto budgeting finances.
For our first lesson, we looked at what it means to be a part of a community. We then read a book titled ‘Beegu’ which is an alien who could not fit in. We spoke about the communities we are a part of and what we could do if we ever met an alien and wanted to help them fit in.
In this lesson, we spoke about how we feel and the experiences that we have had and how they made us feel. We discussed how some people may have had different experiences than others and that we never realise what people have been through. We filled a body outline on how our body feels when we are excited or sad. Then we looked at how we can show compassion through scenarios.
Science
In Science this term, we will be investigating how to classify animals using branching databases before we focus on how we can help endangered animals.
In our first lesson, we looked at the different groups of animals. We were surprised to find that some animals may not belong to the group we suspect. We then had a go at seeing if we could place the animals in the right groups.
In our 2nd lesson, we used venn diagrams to further group animals. We used their diets as a focus as some animals are herbivores, some are carnivores and some are omnivores. We had great fun challenging ourselves.
Today, we went outside to look for insects within our school habitats. We then had a discussion on whether it was right that some animals are endangered as part of our spirituality. We also discussed that even though some insects live in the same habitats, they cannot be grouped the same ways.
Music
In music, we will be focusing on reading music with the goal of creating our own piece of music using ukuleles.
Our first music lesson has seen us looking at musical notes. First, we looked at the stave and what each pitch name was by using a rhyme to help us. Then, we investigated the note lengths of semibreve, minims, crotchets and quavers. We had a go at drawing these notes.
RE
In RE this term, we will be focusing on pilgrimages. We will understand how pilgrimages can be religious and non religious and why Jerusalem is such a special pilgrimage site for many religions.
Our first RE lesson has seen us discussing how pilgrimages are not always the destination, but the journey is as important. We spoke about what places are special to us and shared these in our books.
In our 2nd RE lesson, we discussed how pilgrimages can be religious or non religious. We discussed how they have similarities but also differences. Ultimately, we all agreed that they are as important as each other for their own special reasons.
French
In French, we will be learning how to say popular breakfast items in French. We will then be able to express our preferences on what we like and dislike.
In French, we have looked at popular items and learnt how to pronounce these in French. We have noticed how some words are similar to English words.
Today, we have retrieved French breakfast items before we have shared which items we like and which we do not like. Then we have written these sentences in French. We really enjoyed this as we could test our friends to make sure they were listening.
Computing
This term, we will be focusing on branching databases. We will investigate the use of open ended questions and how attributes will help us to group objects.
In our first lesson, we looked at how to ask open ended questions that either give us yes or no questions. We looked at how we could ask those questions using the attributes of the items.
In our 2nd lesson, we started looking at branching databases. This is where you ask a series of yes and no questions until you reach your object. Did we enjoy it? YES Did we want the lesson to end? NO!
Art
In Art, we will be looking at the work of Herman Finsterlin who is an architect. We will be looking at his use of deep and shallow space for him to create rather unusual looking sculptures.
History
We start our Ancient Egyptian unit this term by looking at the Egyptian civilisation and how they were able to survive.
We started our history unit by looking at the Egyptian timeline of events. We found this fascinating! Then, we looked at where the Egyptian timeline fitted in with other historical events such as the Romans. We were shocked to found out that this was happening at the same time as key events as other historical timelines.
In our 2nd lesson, we focused on Egyptian art and compared these to other examples of art from other time periods. We tried to decipher what we think they mean. We then started to look at hieroglyphics which is how the Egyptians communicated through writing. We really enjoyed trying to spell our name in hieroglyphics.
In our 3rd lesson, we looked at the roles of engineers and farmers. Before that, we discussed the pyramid of roles which showed who was in charge and who was at the bottom. We we re shocked to find out there were so many different roles.
Athletics
We are in full sports day preparation as we practice our Athletic skills, including running, jumping and throwing.
Swimming
We have started our swimming unit this term. We will start by being assessed on our swimming abilities before we refine our skills.
