Spring Term 1

Happy New Year!

We can't wait to start a new term of learning in Year Five as we continue to work as scientists, historians, geographers, coders and artists this term.

Online Safety

Joining in with Safer Internet Day, we also had the pleasure of welcoming Jan Morris in to school from the School Safety Partnership. We explored ways to stay safe online and what to do when we are not happy with something we see or hear.

English

Writing to persuade

This term we are writing to persuade. Using Cloud Tea Monkeys, we began to explore the theme of fair trade and what it means. We identified a product that is not currently fair trade and set about writing to the company to try to persuade them to change their minds! Using key facts and research we were able to write informative letters.

Maths

Using the bus stop method to divide, including finding remainders.

Science

Can the properties of materials be changed?

This term we work as chemists as we continue to build our knowledge about materials and their properties.

Exploring Properties of Materials

Our first Science lesson saw us exploring the properties of materials. Items made from different materials were wrapped into feely bags for us to try and work out the material from the properties we could feel. Lots of retrieval of vocabulary from prior learning could be heard before we unwrapped them and identified the different materials.

Soluble or Insoluble?

Chemical Changes

Mixing milk and water, we saw a chemical change, where a type of plastic used until the 1940's was made. Casein was used for buttons and combs.

Adding bicarbonate of soda to vinegar, we were able to observe the gas produced when the balloon inflated.

RE- Salvation

What did Jesus do to save human beings?

Working as theologists, we explore the big story of the Bible and how incarnation and salvation fit within it.

The Big Story of the Bible

Exploring texts and what they say about Jesus as a saviour. How does he fulfil the prophesy?

History- Trade

How important were the docks in Boston's past?

Exploring the local area and its rich heritage, we work as historians to learn about the link between Boston UK and Boston USA and the push and pull factors for the puritans to leave their home.

Exploring Narrative

Sequencing Key Events

Geography- Place and Connections

What connects the USA to the UK?

Working as geographers, we explore North America, knowing some of the countries and states within it. Identifying significant man made landmarks and the different environments of America, we can build on our knowledge from our previous learning about climate and environments. Working as historians to learn about our home town of Boston, we can then know some of the differences between  Boston UK and Boston USA.

Computing- code

How can I program output devices?

Working as coders, we learn how to control a simple circuit connected to a computer.

Using Cumble Software

PE

Swimming- How can you survive in water?

We look forward to building on our swimming skills from last year as we continue to ensure we can all swim 25 metres confidently and begin to learn more about how we can be safe in water.

Gymnastics- How can communication help you succeed in a routine?

This term we build on prior learning in gymnastics as we perform symmetrical and asymmetrical balances, perform different rolls, explore different methods of travelling and then link them to create sequences on the floor and apparatus.

PSHE- Health and Wellbeing

How is your personal identity created?

This term we build on our prior PSHE learning and identify ways that we can keep ourselves healthy physically, mentally and emotionally.

Art- Visual Culture

What makes a painting "impressive"?

This term we focus on painting. Exploring the work of Banksy and Henri Rousseau, we explore how colour and space are used before creating our own pieces inspired by their styles.

Exploring the work of Banksy

As we begin our study of painters, we start with Banksy, the famous British street artist. We looked at some of his well-known and discussed how and why it was created. We thought carefully about where his work is placed and why this is so important for him as an artist.

Henri Rousseau

Continuing to explore the work of painters, we learnt about Henri Rousseau, the self taught artist who was mocked by many of the greats. We were amazed to find out that he never left France, yet many of his works included jungle scenes and tropical animals, something he had never seen first hand!

Vertical and horizontal placement in art.

Exploring vertical and horizontal placement, we looked at how the artists chose where to place things to give depth and perspective to their work.

Final Piece

Working as painters, we chose the style we wanted to work in to create work that linked to our learning on Fairtrade.

Here is just a selection of our completed work.

Wellbeing Wednesday

Each week we take time to focus on our wellbeing. Adding compliments to a mug, helped us to think about the words we use and how they make other people feel.
