We were very excited to visit the library last week. The children enthusiastically read lots of books about 'Space'. They also went on a tour of the library and made their own bookmarks. The visit has inspired lots of the children to join the library!
In Design Technology the children have been busy designing their own moon buggies. They looked at the design brief carefully to check that their design met all of the criteria. The children then began making the chassis by measuring and sawing the wood to the correct length.
We were so excited to make our own Christingles today. The children talked about the purpose of each part of the Christingle and how they are used. They cannot wait to light them at their own Christingle Service!
We have been busy making our decorations for our hoops. The children worked hard to make 3D paper snowflakes and they all look fantastic up in the school hall.
In English, the children have been memorising the poem 'Extinct'. They have practised performing the poem thinking about pace, voice and expression. The children then used the same structure to write the next verse to the poem.
Over the last week we have been busy designing and making our Christmas cards. The children used their sketching skills to draw Bethlehem. We then used water colours to paint our cards using darker and lighter tones for different parts of the building. We cannot wait to see them when they have finished!
We loved coming into school in non-uniform in order to raise money for Children in Need. We took part in a range of activities and developed our understanding of one of our school values 'compassion'. We also loved taking part in 'The Big Morning Move' with Joe Wicks. A huge thank you to everybody for all of their donations to this worthwhile cause.
This term we continue to learn about space, which will incorporate an engaging DT project involving space buggies... watch this space! Also we have the excitement of performing to parents in 5F class assembly - this will be an enthralling summary of our learning about different aspects of space.
Our Scientific understanding in Term 2 will develop as we undertake practical investigations into Forces. This can be a tricky area for children to understand as the concepts are abstract and can't be seen. We can however see the effects of many forces and will use this to support learning.
We continue to develop our French language abilities through song, rhymes and games - see our time-telling dominoes for more details! We will move on to breakfast, lunch and dinner vocabulary this term.
In RE we look forward to building on our existing understanding of Islamic beliefs, exploring the guidance Muslims take from the Qu'ran and how this influences their daily lives.
It is of course the Christmas term so we will be Christmas crafting wherever we can! We have many plans for many masterpieces, which parents will get to see nearer the time!
Year 5 look forward to leading the Christingle Service at St Thomas' church.
We had so much fun at our parent event! We made our own parachutes using different materials and timed how long they took to reach the ground. We then discussed which parachute took the longest to reach the ground and would be the most suitable because it had the most air resistance.
A huge thank you to everyone who came to our open afternoon. We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as the children. Here are a selection of your lovely comments!
In English, we have been finding out about a new planet called Pandora. We then read a non-chronological report telling us all about it. We have been so excited about designing our own planet and thinking of ambitious vocabulary to describe what lives there, and what the environment is like. We will then use this vocabulary in our own non-chronological reports!
In French, we have been learning to tell the time. We then made our own dominoes by drawing the clock and writing down the times in French. We then had great fun playing with them!
