Ready, Steady, Grow!

   Autumn 1

Well done to 2S for settling into Year Two!

2S have been busy beginning our new topic 'Ready Steady Grow'.  We have already been on an autumn walk and collected natural media that we used to construct our own pictures with.  The children have started to ask questions about the wonderful world around us and how living things grow and change over time.  There is going to be some exciting growing in 2S shortly, so keep watching our class page!

This week in Maths, we have been using snapping crocodiles to explain the value of numbers and using language such as greater than and less than.  This has allowed us to consolidate our knowledge of place value and understanding the worth of each digit.

Year 2 have been busy exploring Science for the first couple of weeks! We have grown seeds, tested and observed what seeds new to grow into healthy plants.  Explored evergreen and deciduous trees and sorted them, rubbed leaves to explore different textures and to investigate the veins as well as develop our scientific reasoning.

This week, 2S have shown their ability to order numbers by using their knowledge of tens and ones.  It was tricky at the start but we worked hard to get there!  Well done 2S!

This week the children have shown their ablity to progress from floor work to using the apparatus in gymnastics.  They have worked in groups and pairs to develop sequences.

2s are thriving during our Harvest topic, recently the children explored primary and secondary colours and quickly progressed on to explore tertiary colours.  Then they investigated the Pop artwork from Andy Warhol.  Finally they produced their own printing boards, mixed teritary colours to create their four piece pumpkin print.

Harvest Assembly

On Thursday 17th October, Year 2 will be performing their Harvest Assembly. Please encourage your child to practice their lines ready for their final performance. The children are looking forward to showcasing their learning about Harvest and especially performing at St Thomas' Church in the afternoon. Can we ask that all costumes are in school by Monday 14th October

We look forward to seeing you all! Thank you for your continued support.

2s printing pumpkins with teritary colours.

2s have shown their great ability to story tell and we used their chosen fairy tale of 'Sleeping Beauty' to explore hot seating, sequencing and roleplaying.  I can not wait to see their writing after this exceptional week of speaking and listening!

Year 2 were incredible today!  They performed their Harvest Assembly twice!  The children, parents and staff were so impressed with the children's knowledge and performance at School and then we were able to share songs, art work and some Harvest History at St Thomas' Church- our extended School Family.  They made us all very proud!

Furthermore, the children organised a phenomenal collection for The Boston Food Bank and we would like to say a huge thank you to all those that contributed and supported Year Two!  What a great end to a busy, amazing first term.

2S loved our visitors this week!  We have a few children who have decided to become future chefs! They learnt about healthy foods, which foods are grown locally and how these ingredients can be transformed into delicious smoothies! And of course tasting was essential to the workshop!

Autumn Term 2

This term we are continuing with our Ready Steady Grow topic however we are focusing upon our Big Question: If there is so much food in the world, why do some people still starve?

Children will continue to understand Harvest around the world as well as reflect on how we can support others in our community but also globally.  Developing our awareness of ‘Thankfulness’.

We will be busy beginning our Christmas crafts, which we are very excited about!

If you would like to help your child with developing their Reading and Comprehension, below are some books that will help your child make connections:

-Amazing Grace

-Grace and family

-Polar Express

-Traction man

-Day crayons quit

As well as non-fiction books linked to nocturnal animals

Week 1: Open Afternoon

Thank you to all the parents and family members who attended our open afternoon. It was lovely to see so many of you and we hope you enjoyed taking part in our learning. The children worked together to create their own biscuits for the homeless and then wrote their own prayers. It was a time to reflect on our lives and share what we are most thankful for.  Thank you for the parents positive feedback too.

We look forward to having you join us again

The children were amazing at using the Hacksaws in DT this week.  They were very excited to make their own wooden decorations for the Christmas fair.  They had to measure in cm's with a ruler, practice measuring lines of different lengths in the shape of a triangle and then cut several sticks using the saw and vice.  They listened well to instructions and kept themselves safe.

This week the children learnt about the Jewish Festival of 'Sukkot'.  The children learnt how they celebrated this and how the Jewish slaves survived 40 years in the desert.   They then had ago at building their own 'Succah' shelter using Lego.  Can you see which team created one of these accurately? They needed to design and build one with the following success criteria:

- 3 walls

- no doors or windows

- vegetation roof

Shhhh! It's a surprise- we have been busy sewing creating our Christmas robins! We are excited for the hoop hanging!

Building words and short sentences

Some children have been applying their phonics to build words and captions.  We are also working hard to use our colourful semantic cards to build sentences.

In Maths we have explore 2D shapes, we have named them, recognised properties and used mirrors for symmetry.

Science and Team building

We created our own food chains and learnt about predators, prey and producers.  We then developed our team building skills to learn to be a class that supports one another.

Christmas Crafts

We have used thin brushes to create our trees and explored colour washing to create the backgrounds.  We then used a running stitch to create Robins.  We used Hacksaws to create stick Christmas tree decorations.

Christmas Hoops

Year 2's Christmas Hoops look amazing! The children have worked incredibly hard to create their Christmas tree decoration using their sewing skills. All the hoops have been used to decorate the main hall.

Children explored pitch by exploring which made a high and low pitch sound, was it the long or short boom whackers?  We then created our piece of music by using colour codes to represent the instrument.

We mDe hot chocolate after watching The Polar Express to help us understand the process, which then allowed us to sequence the events, then talk about these before we had ago at writing our own set of instructions.  It tasted delicious!
