The wonders of creation.
In RE we are exploring the wonders of creation. We have begun by exploring how we can see elements of the natural world in creation around our school grounds. Using paint charts, we have explored with care the different shades of colour we can see around us. After finding examples of each shade, we have discussed the parts of creation we love the most.
This week we have been exploring writing to inform once again. After conducting some research and planning our informative reports about European cities, we have now investigated the vocabulary we might use. After deciding we need positive vocabulary choices, we started with key words and then used thesaurus and dictionaries to look up definitions and synonyms we could use.
This term in French we are building on our knowledge of families and adding in our pets too! Learning new vocabulary, so we can explain which pets with have in our families.

We have enjoyed recalling the pets names in french and then matching names and pets before explaining the pets we have.
World Book Day
On World Book Day we enjoyed dressing up and discussing our favourite books. We shared in reading some more of our Guided Reading whole class text- Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo.
Which book characters can you spot?
This term we have been exploring different ways to balance. Starting on the floor we have then progressed to using equipment to create our own balances.
Fractions, fractions, fractions...
This term we have begun our learning about fractions in Maths. First of all we recalled what we already know about fractions and played a quick match game with our friends to sort some fractions into two groups, explaining to one another why they would be in the same or different groupings.
We then explored fractions of amounts and how we correctly find a fraction.
Using strips of paper, we were then challenged to create our own fraction walls. The key teaching point was that we must ensure that we created fractions that were equal to one another to reinforce a fraction is an equal part of a whole.
We loved working together to measure out the ingredients to make pancakes for the whole of Year Four! After reflecting in Collective Worship about what Lent symbolises, we enjoyed eating pancakes and thinking about how we can show fellowship throughout Lent.
This term in PE, we are learning some of the skills of hockey. Using a hockey stick we began to develop effective dribbling techniques to move around a space.
Now we know the key features of lots of different genres of writing, we were given a mixed bundle of them and challenged to identify those found in a non-chronological report. After much discussion about the genre each feature would be used in, we discussed those we know to be used when writing to inform in the form of a non-chronological report. Applying our learning from last term, we will be creating reports to inform others about some of the beautiful cities of Europe. We can't wait to share them with you!

Visit from the Imam
In collective worship, welcomed a visit from the local Imam. It was perfectly timed for retrieval of our RE learning this term as we answered his questions.
The last week of term, we explored co-ordinates on a 2D grid. Using a floor grid to practice on, we located points correctly, labelled the x and y axis, plotted points, described the translation of points and began making and translating simple shapes too!
Classroom Collective Worship
We were all very proud of our School Council Representative. He worked hard to create a thought provoking power point, asking questions of the class and taking feedback beautifully as he led discussion. A great job!
Testing our European Knowledge
This term our parent event was an opportunity to share our knowledge of Europe so far. We identified European flags, matching them to their country name, matched countries and their capital cities, revisited what we knew about Paris and London and compared them and tried to identify as many European countries on the map as possible before using an atlas. We also had a very fast kahoot quiz to retrieve our knowledge of capital cities!
For our reading morning this term, we added a twist! On our tables were a selection of different texts- just a taster- for us to read. Our challenge was to read as many as we could of the nine and give it a mark out of ten or a star rating. Each title was under a different subheading on our menu. After reading them, we needed to decide which we would want to continue reading from the starter, main course or dessert sections, This created our own personalised reading menu!
During storytelling week, we focused on the traditional tale The Princess and the Pea. We recalled the story and listened to it being told to us rather than being read. After story mapping it, telling it orally and writing it, this enabled us to present our work orally- telling the story individually. Once we knew the story well, we then used it as a model for substitutions. Adding in our own ideas, swapping characters and key objects in the story, we then wrote our own versions.
Mental Health Awareness Week
During Mental Health Awareness Week, we explored facing our fears and shared examples of times when we have needed to be brave. We reflected on these times and how some of them we were pleased we had faced, others we know were things we would not repeat! Our reflections fitted in well with our class virtue of courage. We wore yellow to show our support.
In maths, we have explored division. First we used counters to make numbers and then looked at how we could divide the hundreds, tens and ones equally. Using equipment, we were then able to support ourselves to record division in the bus stop method.
Debussy- La Mer
In Music, we explored the music of Debussy- the French composer. We listened to the music first and then discussed the title and what it meant. We tried to imagine the view he had that inspired him to write this piece of music about the sea.
Voices in the Park
This term we have been exploring the book, Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne. We have explored the vocabulary used for each voice and what it tells us about the character. Getting into role as Charles and his mother, we have enjoyed lots of opportunities for speaking and listening, hot seating and engaging in pretend telephone calls in character. We imagined that Charles' mother would want to complain about the terrible rough-looking children, scruffy mongrels and frightful adults and role played a phone call she may make to the Mayor's office. We explored the kind of vocabulary she would use and how she would then use this to write a letter trying to persuade the Mayor to make the park a safer place.

Where in Europe?
After learning a little about Europe, we looked at a map of the world and found Europe on it. After finding the UK and establishing we are an island, we went on to look at the other countries that make up Europe. Working in groups, we took on the roles of researchers and presenters to locate each country on a map. We made giant posters to present our work.
We are really proud of these members of our class who are part of the team who represented the school at an indoor athletics competition- we think their smiles say it all!
Karl Jenkins Palladio
This term we are exploring different composers from around Europe; listening with attention to detail to their music, the instruments used to perform it and the feelings their work evokes in the listener.
We began our journey in the United Kingdom listening to Palladio, the work of Karl Jenkins, the Welsh composer. Here are some of the comments made by our class about the feelings and images it conjured for them.
What does it make you think of? How does it make you feel?
Recalling what we knew about turtle logo from Year 3, we were able to draw simple shapes and begin to apply the repeat function. Some of us have been practicing these skills at home and were able to be lead learners- writing algorithms and noticing mistakes that needed to be de-bugged!
After discussing what we already know about Europe- the places we've visited and applying knowledge of what we've read before- we went on a hunt around the classroom. Reading different facts, we used the information to answer a range of questions about Europe, it's countries, population and geographical features.
Throughout the day we love to get motivated by listening to Supermovers! Today we recalled the 12 times table as we moved to the music!
Our new science learning this term is all about electricity. We could all easily identify appliances around school and home that use electricity and enjoyed discussion about which items we use both manually and electrically. In groups we sorted images of appliances into electrical and non-electrical. Exploring where electricity comes from, we could apply our own experiences of seeing wind turbines out at sea close to where we live.
Establishing that electricity can be provided by the mains and batteries, we then looked at the electrical items and sorted them into the two sources of electricity.
I wonder which other electrical appliances around our homes we can add to our extensive list?
Who is my neighbour?
We began our new year reflecting on who our neighbours are.
'Your neighbours are the people who live next door to you,' commented Alex.
'We have neighbours in the classroom, they are the people we sit next to,' Phoebe H.
' I think our neighbours can be anyone,' Phoebe F stated, 'It can be anyone in our community.'
After thinking about who our neighbours are at home, school and in the community, we recalled the parable of The Good Samaritan. After watching an animation, we concluded that we don't have to know others in order to be a good neighbour, but it is about the way we choose to treat one another. Even though we have heard the story many times before, we were still surprised at how those who should have helped walked by on the other side.
We then got into character to discuss and role play the story in small groups before creating a simple story sequence for this parable.
Today, we recalled the story of The Good Samaritan by discussing and creating freeze frames for each part of the story.
