Marvellous Maps

Thank you to everyone who came to Year 1 on Friday to take part in our Kandinsky inspired art. We hope you had fun and enjoyed learning about primary colours when painting your houses. They all looked brilliant!

Our Woodland Walk

Thank you to all of the parents and carers for coming to support us on our walk. We had such fun collecting leaves, splashing in puddles and walking around our local wood. We were able to describe our walk the following day in our big write lesson. We used lots of interesting vocabulary to describe our experience.

Addition Fact Families

This week, we have been using our knowledge of addition to create the four associated facts. We discovered that when we add both parts they can be added in any order as long as the whole is the answer. We then learnt that the equal sign can be moved in a number sentence to either the beginning or the end.  We used practical equipment to help us see how the same numbers can be reused.

The Three Little Pigs

Over the past two weeks, the children have been learning about the traditional tale - The Three Little Pigs. We have spent time ensuring we know the sequence of the story and are able to confidently retell to an audience. We sequenced the story using images and then orally retold to our partners. We then used a Pie Corbet style retell which included actions to help us remember all the parts.

This week, Year 1 have been  applying their skills of painting to create a weaved Christmas tree. We created a simple light and dark green watercolour wash - focusing on texture - before weaving the two pieces together. We then cut the tips to look like the points on a Christmas tree. The children finished the design by adding a tree stump and spraying it with a small dash of glitter!

We loved creating our yummy reindeer hot chocolates today! We had to work together to share the ingredients and help to carefully place them in the plastic cone bags. The children had great fun adding eyes and a red fluffy nose to their reindeers. We hope they tasted as good as they looked!

We have continued to learn about our primary colours in Art this term. This week we have been exploring what happens when these three colours are mixed. We discovered that they create secondary colours! The children independently mixed paint together to explore the secondary colours and to record their results. Then using our knowledge we explored pastels and paints to create similar pieces to that of Kandinsky.

This week we have been looking at 'The Gruffalo'. We started by exploring the characters and labelling them with adjectives. We love the story so much that we all wanted to read the story to the class. We all sat and listened as we retold the story with expression. I cant wait to see what our story retells turn out like! Well done Year 1.

Today we were photographers!

We went outside tasked with photographing evidence of the seasons. We looked at the frost on the floor, the bare trees and the ice in the puddles on the playground. We then printed our photographs and labelled the different features of winter.
